| had deteriorated so much that bare aluminum was exposed in more/less a consistent amount and that first picture doesn't really reveal how it really looked after hitting it with the etching cleaner. It looked like the CC was porous and the acid was able to make its way to the metal, but..... The rear passenger wheel's clearcoat was in very good shape as compared to the others. Even after initially hitting it with the etching cleaner, there were no signs of oxidation like the others; it just looked really clean, but not a perfect mirror finish like yours appear to have. I dont know what makes this wheel different from the others - I suspect some variant in the manufacturing process though. I spent the most time on the passenger rear wheel due to the thicker clearcoating on it. It was still a night and day difference on that wheel. I will be looking into having these wheels clearcoated in the near future though - I have a set of Pilot Cup Sports that I want to mount sometime soon and I'll probably clearcoat the wheels when I swap out the tires. I bought these wheels used with about 1500 miles on them and I suspect that the previous owner may have used some particular cleaner on them that hurt the clearcoat(although I couldn't imagine what he could have used that was harsher than the things I tried): the finish wasn't quite perfect on them when I received them - you could see some sort of mildly diffused reflection from the clearcoat. More maintenance until a new clearcoat is applied, no doubt.. Fortunately this isn't my daily driver.
